Opportunities and Expression: UTM Art Clubs in their own words
Get your semester started the right way with these creatively-focused student collectives.
Another semester has arrived for students and student groups at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM). In anticipation for the year, The Medium has had the pleasure of speaking to our campus’ art clubs about the opportunities for self-expression at UTM this semester.
With over 170 clubs, societies, and student associations recognised at UTM for the 2026-27 year, students of all backgrounds have access to a wide variety of communities to help them find their niche and keep them occupied outside of academics.
For the “like-minded students interested in” musical theatre, look no further than Erindale Musical Theatre Productions (EMTP). “The only UTM Musical Theatre-focused student group,” according to EMTP president Mads Carrick, aims to “provide opportunities for students to grow and showcase their skills both in and behind the scenes of a Musical Theatre show.” EMTP’s big events are the Fall Revue, and their Spring Musical. Keep close watch of their Instagram (@utmmtclub) for cast and crew calls coming soon.
If non-theatrical music is more your forte, then check out the Harmonix Music Club (HMC). HMC vice-president Sophia Jin shares that the club does their best to “create an inclusive and diverse musical landscape for students within the UTM community and welcome anyone to come play with [them]” and offers “an environment for creative expression through music by offering spaces and events on campus that allow students to come together.” Their initiatives include Pub Nights, karaoke events, open mic nights, and workshops.
Embroidery meets charity through Craft with Care (CWC), “a new club on campus that seeks to encourage students (and even faculty/staff) to give back to the community.” Aside from facilitating fundraisers and hosting “social events like makerspaces and film nights,” CWC president Adjoa Boateng-Addo and her team encourages “all students with craft skills (like crochet and knitting) to donate handmade items, contributing to meaningful impact through their hobbies” through their Used Clothing Drive. The club uniquely “hopes to encourage students to look beyond themselves and look to those around them.”
If dance piques your interest, get moving with the Lyrical Dance Collective (LDC). Sandra, president and founder of LDC, describes the group as “an all-inclusive dance club at UTM that does not require auditions to join, ensuring students of all experience levels and dance backgrounds are welcome.” LDC holds “drop-in dance classes and weekly performance practices in various styles including jazz, contemporary, hip-hop, Bollywood, and K-pop” alongside offering opportunities to perform throughout the year.
Last but certainly not least, students with “interests in all visual art mediums” can look towards UTM Art Club (UTAC). Returning UTAC president Belinda Zhao already shared with The Medium last year their goal to “Art everywhere,” and the club is expected to continue their quest to do so in 2026-27.
Whether students find their community via any of the aforementioned clubs, or even groups such as Channel6ix Film Studio, Comic Club, or UTM Film Club, art clubs at UTM are connected by a common goal: to bring students together through their particular passions and provide opportunities for creative expression outside of the usual university activities.
