Between Monday, October 19 and Friday, October 23, the Recreation, Athletics and Wellness Centre (RAWC) at UTM hosted RAWC-O-Ween, a week of free Halloween-themed events for students.
The programming included glow-in-the-dark table tennis, the Strength and Conditioning Centre Haunted House, Halloween-themed fitness challenges, a costume walk and hot chocolate, spooky crafts, as well as a Creepy Carnival.
All of these events were free for UTM students, said Ravi Gabble, wellness programs supervisor with the RAWC.
The week of events encouraged international students especially to connect and learn more about Halloween. “RAWC-O-Ween is about giving students opportunities to take a break, get moving, and build connections. If you’re experiencing Halloween for the first time, rest assured that no previous experience is needed to have a good time and make friends. All fitness levels are welcome,” Gabble explained.
The International Education Centre (IEC) partnered with the RAWC on the costume walk and hot chocolate. Gabble shared that the IEC has worked with the RAWC on previous events and continues to bring movement and connections to international students.
The week offered many opportunities for different students to take part, from relaxing events and crafts to campus exploration and social activities. “This variety gives students options based on their interests and comfort levels,” said Gabble.
Alongside the RAWC Halloween-themed events, the UTM Students’ Union (UTMSU) hosted Hallo-Week events from October 20 to 23.
Included were a variety of free and paid events with registration required. Students were invited to attend Chill and Thrill crafts, an escape room night in the Student Centre, and The Night of Lights at Sherway Gardens. The Night of Lights will include axe throwing, a slow walk through lights, bracelet making, photo moments, a 5,000-square-foot corn maze, and pumpkin smashing.
Hallo-Week originally included a Fright Night Pub Night, hosted at the Blind Duck, featuring a costume contest. The event was cancelled due to “unforeseen circumstances,” according to the UTMSU Instagram page @myutmsu. Refunds have been issued to students who paid to attend.
