Job Description:

As a member of The Medium’s Editorial team, the Copy Editor will be responsible for editing a set of articles weekly. Edits will be both structural and grammatical, promoting the quality, standards, and integrity of The Medium while following journalistic ethics. The Copy Editor will work as part of a team and provide feedback to section editors.

Responsibilities:

  • Proofread and edit spelling, grammar, and syntax
  • Provide structural edits
  • Fact-check all information in weekly articles
  • Perform diligent, thorough plagiarism checks
  • Ensure citations and references are listed and accurate
  • Ensure that all content follows The Medium’s in-house style guidelines
  • Adhere to deadlines and communicate with members of the Editorial team

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Current student or recent alumni of UTM
  • Experience editing for a similar publication or proven experience with copy editing
  • Highly organized and detailed-orientated
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word
  • Excellent communication and time management skills, and command of the English language

Contract length: August 2023 to May 2024

Job Description:

As a member of The Medium’s Editorial team, the Design Editor will be responsible for the design and layout of all issues of Volume 50, including Medium Magazine. The Design Editor will work with the Editor-in-Chief and the Managing Editors to create cohesive, visually-appealing issues that align with the missions and values of The Medium. Responsibilities of the Design Editor include, but are not limited to:

  • Designing the weekly layout of the paper
  • Creating illustrations to accompany articles
  • Collaborating with the Photos Editor to create cohesive weekly issues
  • Spearheading the design of Medium Magazine along with the Editor-in-Chief and the Managing Editors

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Current student or recent alumni of UTM
  • Experience with Adobe InDesign is necessary for this position
  • Highly organized and detailed oriented
  • Excellent communication and time management skills
  • Creativity and enthusiasm!

What is The Medium/The Message?

The Medium/The Message is The Medium’s in-house podcast project. The podcast aims to feature student voices through compelling storytelling. Topics covered include student life, relationships, societal and political matters, and campus updates and research. The podcast is hosted by the Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor while featuring the voices of the fellow Editorial Team, UTM students, faculty and staff, and other guests.

Job Description:

As a member of The Medium’s Editorial team, the Podcast Editor will be responsible for editing bi-weekly podcast episodes recorded by the publication’s Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editors. Podcast episodes will be roughly 45 minutes to an hour long. The Podcast Editor will also edit sound bites to promote the episodes when they are uploaded on Apple Music, Spotify, and other podcasting platforms. The Podcast Editor will not be required to be present on campus as files will be sent digitally – however, the Podcast Editor is also more than welcome to record episodes of the podcast. The episodes will be edited to a high standard while staying interactive and engaging for the listener. They will promote the quality, standards, and integrity of The Medium’s podcast.

Responsibilities:

  • Produce a bi-weekly podcast episode to be uploaded every second Wednesday
  • Provide ideas for podcast episodes
  • Edit provided audio clips for sound quality and storytelling
  • Edit under strict deadlines
  • Communicate with Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editors as concerns arise
  • Develop an overall podcast brand messaging strategy

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Current student or recent alumni of UTM
  • Experience in audio editing for projects, inserting sound effects, music, and transitions
  • Highly organized and detailed oriented
  • Excellent communication and time management skills
  • Proficiency in audio editing
  • Proficiency in editing software of choice

Job Description:

As a member of The Medium’s Editorial Team, the Videographer will be responsible for filming and editing multimedia content. This will include promotional videos, marketing materials, interactive projects, and news reports. The Videographer will need to commit to being on campus at least once a week and will have to provide their own tech and equipment. Multimedia projects must be edited to a high standard while staying interactive and eye-catching for the viewer. The Videographer will maintain the quality, standards, and integrity of The Medium.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop an overall video brand messaging strategy
  • Collaborate with The Medium’s Editorial Team on promotional content
  • Shoot and edit under strict deadlines
  • Set up lighting, audio, and camera equipment
  • Work both on and off campus

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Current student or recent alumni of UTM
  • Experience filming and editing high-quality and professional video projects, as well as inserting sound effects, music, and transitions
  • Highly organized and detailed orientated
  • Excellent communication and time management skills
  • Proficiency in lighting, audio and prop setup
  • Proficiency in editing software of choice
  • Open to working on projects for a variety of platforms including, but not limited to, YouTube and Instagram

Application Assignment:

Along with your resume, please submit a short video in which you pitch 2-3 video projects you would submit to accompany a promotional campaign for a magazine launch. These projects could involve the editorial team, the contributing writers, or any other creative strategies you can think of. As for the format of the video, take any creative liberties you see fit—and don’t forget to have fun with it. At the beginning of the video, please briefly introduce yourself and discuss any relevant experience or aspirations.
